Abstract

The equation of state of sodium chloride is studied, using an exponential force law for the nonโ€Coulombic interaction between neighbouring ions. A modified form of KELLERMANN'S model is used which takes into account the zero point energy of the lattice. The evaluation of certain parameters (A and B) defined by KELLERMANN requires a knowledge of the frequency spectrum of the crystal which is itself a function of A and B. An iterative process was therefore used for the estimation of these parameters. Values of thermal expansion, and isothermal compressibility are determined at different temperatures and fairly good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained up to about 700 ยฐK. The isotherm for 1025 ยฐK has a minimum on the zero pressure axis.
