✦ Synopsis


We suggest a ΓΏgure of merit for the zero dimensionality, which is the most important property in quantum dots (QD). QD samples emitting at longer wavelengths are turned out to have the larger energy level spacings between the ground and ΓΏrst excited states. The QDs have the stronger quantum e ect likely due to the taller height and are closer to an ideal zero-dimensional system.

Using a variational approach within the effective mass approximation we calculate the binding energy of the ground and some excited donor impurity states in quantum-well wires with rectangular and cylindrical transversal sections under the action of applied electric fields. We study the binding ener
