β¦ Synopsis
Kat started, heart hammering in her chest as the library door slammed shut behind her, filling the corridor with a thunderous echo. She tried to catch her breath, eyes adjusting to the gloom. What had she just read? What did it mean? Her father had been murderedβpoisoned. But by whom, and for what reason? Perhaps, if she could understand why he was killed, it would point to the killer. Was it someone she knew? Who else knew he was murdered?
She moved slowly along the corridor, away from the library, mind racing. It struck her that it would be easier to take the hands of the gods and be lifted through the air than it would to discover why he was poisoned. After all, The Book of Empire suggested several reasons why someone would want him murdered.Β It could have been agents of Wiete, Martoch, the Southern Isles, or Sieshin. Perhaps it was an abolitionist group or an attempted coup by the military. It could have been something as simple as a personal grudge, an unpaid debt, or even an accident.

Four centuries ago, a Muslim woman ruled an empire. Her legend still lives, but her story was lost--until now. In 1611, thirty-four-year-old Nur Jahan, daughter of a Persian noble and widow of a subversive official, became the twentieth and favorite wife of the Emperor Jahangir, who ruled the vast
