โฆ Synopsis
The emission of radiation from flat-bottomed metal crucibles containing selenium is treated theoretically. The analysis is appficable to dielectric materials and metal crucibles having different optical properties. It is shown that the small optical absorption coefficient of pure selenium in the near i.r. leads to a situation in which the radiation emissive power is largely controlled by the coupling of radiant energy into the selenium across the metal-selenium interface. As a result, the emissive power is expected to vary as the crucible emissivity changes with usage.
