✦ Synopsis


Premixed flames of methane with fluorine have been stabilized in the pressure range from 3 to 10 torr for the purpose of investigating their emission spectra. The flame spectra reveal the presence of three distinct continua: the C a continuum; a continuum in the region from 250 to 340 nm, very likely due to the recombination of the fluorine atoms; and a continous emission due to carbon particles. The bands observed include those of CH, C2, and OH, the latter being due to oxygen impurities in the fluorine supply. Although the dominant flame radiation was due to C 8 emission the discrete Swings bands of C 3 could not be identified in these premixed flames. Spectral radiances of the above emissions were obtained for various feed compositions within the limit of flame stability. These measurements revealed that the C 2 band emission intensity was proportional to the 1.6 power of that of CH, giving supporting evidence for the formation of C 2 by the reactions, CH
