The preparation of graphite-alkali metal-solvent or graphite-N&-solvent ternary intercalation compounds by electrochemical reduction of graphite is described. The reduction occurs stagewise and the complete formation of a defined stage can be recognized by a striking change in the potential of the g

✦ Synopsis
The slow potentiodynamic method and galvanostatic measurements in 0.25 M H,SO, have appeared to bc very useful tools to determine the quantity of the lower chromium oxides built into graphite_CrOs compounds (GIG-CrO,'s). From the charge and discharge curves it has been possible to calculate the oxidation state of chromium in these oxides. The results obtained showed that the amount of lower oxides and the oxidation state of chromium depend both on the graphite flake size and the intercalation time. The concentration of intercalant in GIG-CrO,'s decreases on prolonging the intercalation process as a result of the increase of the amount of lower oxides and the decrease of the oxidation state of chromium. The relations between the narameters determined chemically and elcctrochemically are considered to explain the mechanism of intercalation.
