✦ Synopsis

The effect on audibility thresholds ofvariations in rise time and repetition rate of acoustic transients one millisecond in duration was studied. It was found that threshold was lowered (improved) by increase in rise time, a paradoxical effect in view of previous findings that the loudness of transients increases as rise time is shortened, and also that threshold decreases curvilinearly with increases in repetition rate. The results are interpreted in terms of Zwislocki's theory of temporal integration and a critical bandwidth that does not alter with duration of the sound.
