The 30-d survival limit of Eupentacm quinquesemita and StrongSocentrotus droebachiensis is 12-13%o S. The activity coefficient (1 000/righting time in seconds) of stepwise accIimated sea urchins declined from 16.3 at 30%0 S to 3.5 at 15%o S. Oxygen consumption rates (QO2) of both species held at 30%

โฆ Synopsis
An attempt to account on chemical grounds for the morphogenic polarity of the egg has been made by Runnstrom ('35), Lindahl ( '37) et al. The experiments on which this hypothesis has been built consist chiefly of those on the effects of lithium in inhibiting the oxidations of the egg, together with the synergic effects of IiCN and CO when used with lithium. This inhibition of oxidation, they argue, is the basis of the vegetalizing effect of lithium. Both the respiratory and vegetalizing effects of lithium are inhibited by the presence of an excess of potassium ions. Supplementary experiments in which the breis of cytolyzed eggs and of yeast were used have shown that lithium ion inhibits both respiration and glycolysis. Lindahl ( '37) has presented much factual
