β¦ Synopsis
In an attempt to clarify the effect of hydration on the unit cell (u.c.) size of zeolite-Y, the lattice parameter was monitored at various stages of hydration. The u.c. was found to increase upon dehydration from 24.66 A for the Na-Y starting material to 24.75 A for the fully dehydrated material. The u.c. size was also found to increase upon decreasing the sodium content, with a dramatic rise at the very low sodium levels (< 0.1 Na wt%).

Compositionally similar samples of hydrated Na-X zeolite with 220-265 water molecules per unit cell are shown by X-ray diffraction methods to exhibit structural differences. Three samples, independently treated to maximize Na and H20 content, crystallographically resemble the samples studied by Brou
