TEN CHARTS

I n papers by Allen ( '16, '17, '18, '19) and by Hoskins ( '16, '17, '18, '19) it has been shown that extirpation of the anlage of the thyroid gland in young tadpoles of Rana and Kufo prevents metamorphosis. The same result is attained according to Adler ( '14), Allen ( '16, '17, '18), and Smith ( '16, '18, '20) by extirpation of the buccal anlage of the hypophysis from which arise the anterior, intermediate, and pars tuberalis portions. More recent work has shown that the part actually involved in this case is the anterior lobe. During the work of several years a sufficient amount of material was collected to make this paper possible. It may be pointed out that in all of these experiments the glands were removed at their inception. The pituitary anlage is removed at a period when the tail bud is first beginning to grow. Rana pipiens stage of 3 to 3; mni. The thyroid gland is removed

A number of observers have studied the effects of partial or total extirpation of the limb buds of various embryos. Also, the transplantation of limb buds has been successfully carried out in connection with various problems. Byrnes, in 1898, studied the regeneration of limbs in Rana embryos after e
