A CONSIDERABLE amount of work has been reported"*' on the applicability of fXury1 alcohol as a graphite binder material. However, there appears to be no information in the open literature dealing with the effects of curing and baking procedures on properties of furfuryl alcohol bonded graphites. Through contact with other laboratories engaged in the fabrication of these materials it appears that the standard curing and baking procedure consists basically of a slow cure in air followed by a vacuum bake. Because there seemed to be no apparent reason for this particular choice of curing and baking environments a limited experiment was undertaken in this laboratory to determine the effects of several different curing and baking environments on the properties of this type of material. The preliminary results of this work are reported here.

The filler material used in this experiment was a mixture of 85 parts, by weight, commercial graphite flour* and 15 parts regular Thermax carbon black,? and the binder was furfuryl alcohol monomer$ in the amount of 24 parts per 100 parts of filler. Blending of the green mix was done by conventional techniques * Great Lakes Carbon Corp. grade No. 1008. t Thermatomic Carbon Co. $ Eastman grade No. 1360.
