The vibronic structure superimposed on the benzene Rydberg transltron corrcspondmg to 3ctu(r) -+ 3s(alg) cxcitatlon nt I 1 eV has been studred ~pnctroscopicsIfy_ The rcvcnfed structure is interpreted in terms of two Rydbcrg systems deriving from 3e2&r) -c 6pfqu) and 3e2,[a} 3 Sf(bru, blu, el,, cau) which fit respectively the 6 = 0.47 and 6 = 0.3 Kydberg writs converging to the second ionimtion limil. In II = 6; 6 = 0.3 the pure electronic band as well as the O-l band correspondmg to vz(alg) split upon reducing the vibrational symmetry to I&h by suitable deutcrations whereas no such 5plittmg was detected cm the 0-l bnntl corresponding to the Jahn-Tcllcr active mode ulg(e&
