Tlie transitory arrest of mitosis in the epidei*iiiis of tlie mouse ear has been shown by Knowlton and IIempelniaiin ('49) to be a sensitive in'dex of radiation dosage to tlie whole I)ody in tlie range of 5 to 325 r. Administration of the tliyroid Iiornionc has beeii reported to cause a n increase in tlie mitotic activity of cells of the adrenal glmand (Schmidt and Seliinidt, '38) and to cause an enlargement of kidney, spleen and heart (I\Iac*I<ay aiid IIacKay, 'a). Since thyroid adniinistration to mice after whole-bo,dy irradiation considerably increases mortality (Smith aiid Sniith, '5la) it occurred to us that tlie effect of thyroid on recovery of mitotic activity after the arrest caused hy radiation should be investigated.
