✦ Synopsis

In this paper an attempt has been made to study the effect of shot peening on stress corrosion cracking of 2205-Duplex stainless steel. Cast steel shot was selected to be the peening media. Specimens of 2205-Duplex stainless steel were tested in the peened and unpeened condition. Quantitative data of hours to failure were recorded for tests on specimens stressed to various percentages of yield strength in corrosion aqueous solutions.

The residual compressive stress caused by shot peening with different shot sizes on the surface was measured by X-ray method. Tests of 2205-Duplex stainless steel showed that shot peening is effective in retarding stress corrosion cracking in the material studied.

## Abstract Recent opinions on the effect of nonmetallic inclusions, especially sulfides, on the nucleation of pits, stress corrosion cracks, and hydrogen‐induced cracks are reviewed. The nonmetallic inclusions present in steels as impurities adversely affect the corrosion resistance of steels. Th
