โฆ Synopsis
Breeding material of potatoes containing the genes R 1 , R 2 and R3 , single or in combination, was tested for its resistance in the flesh to five different races of Phytophthora infestans.
There was a considerable variation in response, from extreme hypersensitivity with no necrosis visible with the naked eye to cases where the tuber hardly showed any inhibition at all to the growth of the parasite .
It appeared that the effect of the genes R 2 and R 3 in the tubers was very different from that exerted in the foliage . However, a correlated effect of the gene R 1 cannot be denied .
The results are compared with those obtained by LEHMANN in 1938 and in great outline they agree very well .
