β¦ Synopsis
Experimental evidence has shown that the voltage neeessm3, to produce saturation in flat flames is significantly reduced when small quantifies of positive ions are introduced at the anode. By using another flame as a controllable ion source the relationship between the rate of ionization at this source and the voltage reduction has been established. A mathematical model and numerical solutions are presented which agree reasonably well with the experimental observations. These solutions are used to derive average values of the mobility of the positive and negative species traveling in the interelectrode space. Examination of the ratio of mobility of positive and negative species demonstrates that only partial electron attachment occurs in the burned gas legion. * Staff sabbatical with the University of Hawaii.
