✦ Synopsis

A possible relationship between central nervous muscarinic and monoaminergic mechanisms with regard to inhibition of oestrous behaviour in female rats was investigated. Increased central nervous monoaminergie activity brought about by the monoamine oxidase inhibitors nialamide or pargyline or by desmethylimipramine augmented and/or prolonged the heat inhibitory effect of pilocarpine. Parallel studies on body temperature reveal that the synergism is probably not due to a decreased rate of elimination of piloearpine, at least in the cases of pargyline and desmethylimipramine.
