β¦ Synopsis
Hygvophorus conicus has been shown to catalyze the hydroxylation of steroids (Schuytema et al., 1963) and to convert indole acetic acid to oxindole acetic acid (Siehr, 1961). In a study designed to locate the enzyme catalyzing the latter reaction, an attempt to isolate functional mitochondria was made. During these studies a stimulation of succinate dehydrogenase activity and the formation of nitrite was observed when H. conicus was grown on media containing nitrate. There seems to be a correlation between the suceinate dehydrogenase activity and nitrate reduction in this organism.
