✦ Synopsis

Empirical solar models contain the effect of heating due to radiative energy loss from acoustic waves. We estimate here the temperature difference between the radiative equilibrium model and the empirical model. At optical depth zs0o0= 0.1 this difference is small, but near the temperature minimum (zso00--10 -4) it reaches between 53 and 83K. The temperature difference between the equator and the poles caused by a hypothetical difference in the heating is estimated.

The effect of using time-averaged wave statistics in a simple empirical model for shoreline change is investigated. The model was first calibrated with a six-year time series of hourly wave conditions and weekly shoreline position at the Gold Coast, Australia. The model was then recalibrated with th

Progressive Alfv6n waves set the atoms in oscillatory motion. The radiation will be absorbed (emitted) at a Doppler-shifted wavelength; the Doppler shift is determined by the velocity given to the atoms by the wave. The effect of the waves on the line profile, integrated over one period, is given fo
