✦ Synopsis

Composite materials were prepared from C3S and 12% (I) vinyl sulfonic acid (2) p-styrene sulfonic acid. The hydration of the composite systems were compared to that of neat C3S for different ages up to 90 d, by DTA-TG, IR and XRD. The polymers were found to retard the hydration of the silicate due to the interaction between the Ca 2+ ions, released during the hydration of C3S, and the sulfonate group of the polymers.

The effect of gypsum on the early stages of C3S hydration is explored by means of DTA, high-resolution STF~I, and liquid phase studies. Literature data show that substantial amounts of sulfate ion can be incorporated in the structure of C-S-H, the main product of C3S hydration (1-5). During hydrati

A mixture of five kinds of Japanese pozzolanas and synthesized pure C3S were hydrated. The hydration mechanism in the system C3S-pozzolana was investigated. The hydration of C3S was accelerated by the addition of pozzolanas. The reasons for the acceleration increase of the precipitation sites of hyd

Small quantities (<2%) of various metal oxides are incorporated into the lattice of ~-C2S during the high temperature preparation. The effect which these stabilizers have on the hydration rate is examined. A model involving the charge/radius ratio of the metal ion is developed to explain altered hyd

The concentrations of calcium and silica in solution during the first 4 hours of C3S hydration were measured. The results of these analyses indicate that a solid calcium silicate hydrate forms within 30 seconds of the start of hydration and that an equilibrium between the solution and the solid hyd
