✦ Synopsis

Many industrial work tasks involve lifting and transporting heavy objects for extended periods of time. The purposes of the work reported here were: (1) to find if isometric strength tests were valid predictors of coal mining endurance work tasks; (2) to compare the obtained strength validity with laboratory measured arm endurance (arm VO2max); and (3) to determine if the strength test validity could be generalized to men and women. Shovelling and 501b bag transport endurance tests were developed to simulate biomechanically the shovelling and transport tasks observed in the job. The sum of isometric grip, arm lift and torso lift strength tests (IS) measured strength. Indirect calorimetry measured maximal oxygen uptake (arm VOzroax) for arm work. The sample included 28 male and 28 female physically fit college students.

Endurance work task performance was more highly correlated with IS than arm VO2max. The correlations were: shovelling rate, 0.71 vs. 0.68; and bag carry rate, 0.71 vs. 0.46, respectively. Multiple regression confirmed that a common regression line explained male and female performance and that the relation was quadratic. The results of this study showed that IS was related to endurance work test performance and was a more valid predictor of endurance work test performance than laboratorydetermined arm VO2max.
