✦ Synopsis

An experimental study was undertaken to determine the effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on a 150 1 hybrid anaerobic baffled reactor (HABR) at constant organic loading 10 kg rn-) d-'.

When the HRT was gradually changed from 1 day to 6 days, i.e. the feed concentration changed from 10 gl-' to 60g I-', the COD reduction dropped from 75% to about 40%, the gas production rate decreased from 5.2 m3 mm3 d-' to 3.4 m3 me3 d-', and the effluent volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration increased from 430mg 1-i to about 16,000 mgl-'. Thus methanogenic inhibition occurred at longer HRTs. The experimental results strongly suggested that the HRT is a significant factor for HABR performance.

This paper describes the performance of a granular bed baffled reactor when receiving unpredictable hydraulic shock loads, which is a frequent occurrence in industrial wastewater treatment plants. Shock loads were created by rapidly increasing volumetric organic loading rates from 2.5 to 20 kg COD m
