✦ Synopsis
Samples of Pile
Grade A and Gilsocarbon nuclear graphites as used in the United Kingdom Gas-cooled Reactors have been heat-treated to a final temperature of 34OO"C, compared to the normal values of -2800°C. The behaviour of these materials has been compared with standard material under neutron irradiation at 450°C to doses of -4 x lo*' n/cm? (EDN). It was found that the increased final heat treatment temperature had a small effect on the physical properties reflecting improved perfection, but the changes in properties with irradiation showed very little change.
