✦ Synopsis


and other techniques are used to investigate the nature of sulfur in carbon black as a function of heat treatment. In as-received samples, sulfur exists as bound to carbon in lower oxidation states and as inorganic sulfates in higher oxidation states. This study demonstrates that inorganic sulfate present in carbon black is reduced to bound sulfur in lower oxidation states upon heat treatment. Evidence for the removal of inorganic sulfate from carbon black via transformation to bound sulfur is presented.
