β¦ Synopsis
The analysis is presented for an adiabatic packed bed reactor in which an exothermic first order catalytic reaction is canied out. The reactor is considered to operate under conditions such that the pressure drop is specified, rather than the mass flow rate of the reactant gas; thus the gas flow rate is regarded as a dependent variable, which is a function of the progress of the reaction, of the temperature profiles, and of the bed parameters, such as the void fraction. This interaction between the mass flow, the chemical reaction and the heat transfer in the bed was found to have a profound effect on the performance of the system.
