✦ Synopsis

The presence of small amounts of chlorine or bromine greatly accelerates the rate of absorption of CO, in aqueous buffer solutions. This is because the halogens are hydrolysed to OCIor OBr-, which are powerful catalysts for the reaction between CO2 and water. An approximate mathematical analysis is given, and agrees reasonably with the observations.
