Factors affecting the thermosetting properties of spray-or freeze-dried, ammonium-based spent sulfite liquor, a material rich in lignosulfonates, were investigated. It was found that purified lignosulfonates did not thermoset readily, unless either monomeric wood sugars or formaldehyde were present.
