✦ Synopsis

The effect of oral copper and cadmium on %n tramport to the carcass and -Zn uptake by the small intestine wm examined 'Q zinc-deficient and zinc-supplemented rats. Neither copper nor cadmium, when administered orally 6th tiZn-Zn in ratios of lOOO:l, lm:l, or lO:l, affected =Zn transport to the carcass in zinc-deficient rats, but both elements inhibited YZn transport to the carcass in zinc-supplemented rats. Copper had little or no effect on "Zn uptake by the intestine in either group, whereas cadmium markedly decreased intestinal Vn uptake in both deficient and supplemented rats. The experimental results suggest that zinc absorption consists of two independent processes: (a) zinc uptake by the intestinal epithelial cells and (b) zinc transport from the hnnen to the blood.

INTRODIKTION

Although zinc is known to be an essential nutrient, the mechanisms which regulate the absorption of this element from the gastrointestinal tract remain obscure. Recent investigations suggest that zinc is complexed with a low molecular weight ligand prior to being transported from the * Supported in part by USDA Cooperative Agreement 12-l&100-11,178 (61), Amend.

Zinc concentration and (65)Zn uptake in the brain of rats fed zinc-deficient diet for 12 weeks were examined, based on a previous finding of the impairment of learning behavior by the zinc deprivation. Zinc concentrations in the brain, except for the hippocampal formation, did not decrease significa
