D-glucose, when dissolved in an aqueous medium, is composed of an a-and @-isomer. Faust ('60) has demonstrated, with human red cells into which glucose penetrates rapidly but not against a concentration gradient, that P-D-glucose penetrates into these cells three times more rapidly than a-D-glucose.
