✦ Synopsis

The dynamic magnetostrictive properties of a 2.2yo Cr-Ni alloy were studied as a function of annealing conditions, including atmosphere, temperature and time. The binary alloy, unlike unalloyed nickel, was particularly affected by annealing atmosphere, an oxidizing anneal producing a sheared hysteresis loop. Conditions for developing good magnetostrictive properties by annealing in air are defined and an explanation of the sheafing mechanism proposed.
