fating Disorders Inventory (ED/) is a significant and meaningful predictor of adherence in a dietary program employing a very low-calorie diet. This study used mu/- tiple linear regression and discriminant analysis to examine the dietary adherence of 105 clients who were, on average, 91 pounds overweight. With three increasingly rigid standards of success, discrimindnt analysis successfully classified 74%, 7 1 %, and 6 3 % of clients as likely successes or failures using the ED/. Using the ED1 scales as the independent variables, three significant multiple regressions equations were obtained that individually were predictive of total weight lost, percentage of weight lost, or weeks in treatment.

The treatment of weight problems historically has met with mediocre outcomes at best (Stunkard & McLaren-Hume, 1959; Stunkard, 1980). This is probably a result of the multiple etiologies that contribute to this condition (
