✦ Synopsis

problems of uniting a divided world in the face of sharp divisions between developed and less developed nations, examining the disparities that exist between the various parties negotiating the Climate Change Convention. Thomas Downing looks at climate change and food security. Recent progress in vulnerability assessment, monitoring famine and directing food aid should allow us to deal with the worst impacts of climate change.

A summary and synthesis by the editors would have been useful. Nevertheless, overall the conclusions of the contributors are clear. Their views are more positive and up-beat than might have been expected, but their message is a simple one. Various alternative 'future histories' of the Earth are sketched out by the contributors, and few of them look attractive. Unless we and the next couple of generations take major action to halt the continuing downgrading of our environment, the future looks bleak. There is an urgent need for internationally coordinated research and action to achieve environmental sustainability.
