✦ Synopsis

We have examined longitudinal phonons for silver on Ni( 100) in the harmonic approximation. We have also performed studies of adatom energies and mean square displacements for this system. The results show that at room temperature , and with reasonable values of the potential coupling the silver atoms to the nickel surface, the displacements of the silver atoms are quite large compared with both the substrate lattice spacing and with the distances between energy minima. We conclude that subsequent studies of this system should be done with molecular dynamics to allow for large excursions of the adsotbate atoms which introduce anharmonic effects not treatable by the
