β¦ Synopsis
The relevance of both experimental and theoretical studies of the dynamics of elementary reactions towards the understanding of combustion and flames is emphasized with examples. An overview considers in particular the importance of thermal disequilibrium and of three-body effects which we suggest are more common than often considered. As a specific problem, the extrapolation of the reaction rate constant to higher temperatures is considered. The increase of the activation energy with temperature is dicussed in general and the particular reasons why it so increases for the H + tt2 reaction are examined in some detail.
