✦ Synopsis

In spring 1998 two identical RICH detectors were installed in the HERMES spectrometer. Main features of these detectors are the use of two radiators. One of them is the silica aerogel, a solid SiO2 based compound never used before in a RICH. The photon detector is made of a matrix of 1934 3/4" PMTs. In this talk, a description of the detector, the expected and the first preliminary performances are presented. One section is dedicated to the pattern recognition methods adopted.
