✦ Synopsis

The Barnes & Noble Review
In Alan F. Troop's debut novel, The Dragon Dela Sangre, we are introduced to one of the few remaining dragon families on Earth. Peter Dela Sangre has been raised on an island off the coast of Miami that his very wealthy family has owned for hundreds of years. A functioning company has been created to ensure that the family seems legitimate, although their riches were really obtained through years of piracy.

At his mother's insistence, Peter was educated as a boy in human ways. Peter's father, however, thought this a useless thing. "We are what we are." But for all of Peter's good fortune -- his wealth, his family, his human education -- he is lonely. He tries to balance his life between human and dragon form, but he has a strange love of humans. It's not just because they taste good or that they make good sexual partners; he has a genuine affection for them. Peter's feelings lead him to make a serious mistake. It's not a good thing for a dragon to have a conscience. A dragon cannot feel remorse or guilt when hunting humans.

Peter vows to find a wife, one of his own kind. He picks up the scent of a female dragon off the coast of Jamaica. After meeting her, it turns out that her family members are also pirates, except they're not as modern as Peter's family. Their basements are filled with human slaves. When Peter expresses concern about this to his bride-to-be, her answer is totally dragon: "Why concern yourself, they are only human."

Together, Peter and his bride are magnificent lovers and hunters. He enjoys showing his much younger bride human ways, which -- when they benefit her -- she accepts. But Peter's yearning for human acceptance ultimately leads to big trouble for the newlyweds. (S.W.)
