✦ Synopsis

The chvlslon of gas flow between the two phases of a flmdlsed bed of commercial catalyst powder has been determmed from measurements of mterstltlal phase vokdage and bed height over a wide range of gas velocltles Voldage measurements were made by comparing the X-ray absorption of the mterstltial phase of the freely bubbhng catalyst with that of a cahbratlon wedge Lontammg the same material X-Ray photography was also used m the measurement of bed height Three batches of catalyst powder contammg different amounts of 'fines' were exammed The results clearly demonstrate that mcreasmg the fines content of a fluuiised powder leads to an Increase m the relative proportion of gas flowing rnterstltlally at all tlurd vetocitIes Furthermore the mterstltial gas Bow IS shown to be up to 25 times greater than the muumum Ruldisatlon value for the powder contauung the highest proportion of fines The lmphcatlons of ttus for the two phase theory of flutdlsatlon and for the design and operation of Atuchsed bed reactors IS dIscussed

Abstracts The results of two different experimental methods, X-ray absorption and bed collapse, for the determination of the emulsion-phase voidage of gas fluid&d beds are compared. It is shown that good agreement exists between them over the range of gas velocities studied, but that possible differ
