โฆ Synopsis
Different opinions concerning the correct form -and the very existence -of the dispersion equation for waves in plasmas have appeared in the literature. The ori#n of these differences is here discussed. *) For an investigation on the applicability of this assumption to gas discharges see E. A. Ash and D. Gabor, Proc. roy. Soc. (A) 228 (1955) 477. *) 'improper' refers to the fact that they are not square integr-able, which shows up by the appearance of a ~-function.

The dispersion relation for magnetosonic waves within the upper atmospheric plasma has been derived. The result can be used to study the variation of the longitudinal and transverse component of velocities.
