โœฆ Synopsis

In this paper the geometrical aberrations of a rotationally symmetrical optical system are dealt with in a n.ew way, suggested by the wave-optical treatment of the image errors to be published subsequently. A spherical surface is introduced with its centre at the G a u s s i a n image (situated at a radial distance a from the axis) and passing through the centre of the *) The results concerning the diffraction theory will be published in Part II (by F" Zernike)

and in Part III (by the author). The contents of Part I and Part III are more extensively dealt with in the author's thesis, Groningen 1942.
