✦ Synopsis

An approximate elastic analysis, which includes the effect of concentrated loads and reactions is used to predict theoretically the web cracking load of prestressed 1 beams without web reinforcement. The theoretical results are compared with nearly 200 test results. NOMENCLATURE a shear span AF axial force b breadth of the web BM bending moment d total depth of the beam f ~ 150 x 300 mm cylinder strength fc, tensile strength of concrete L span l L/d RL, Ra Reactions at left hand and right hand supports respectively SF shear force Uw 150 mm cube strength W concentrated load at midspan x,' y' Cartesian co-ordinates x, y non dimensional co-ordinates xc, yc co-ordinates of the point of maximum tensile stress at failure, xc measured from left support and y~ from the lower flange web junction. a, z normal and shear stresses, subscripts indicate direction.
