Abstract

The interpretation of experimental observations, described in a preceding paper, of the electrostatic field‐changes due to lightning flashes, is considered. It is found that almost all the recorded field‐changes can be most simply explained in terms of leaders carrying negative charge and originating in the lower part of a thundercloud. Those that reach the ground are succeeded by return strokes. It is considered that both leaders and return strokes consist of a central core surrounded by an envelope of corona; this corona concept, originally advanced by Bruce, leads to a coherent picture of the phenomena observed.

## Abstract The annual production of nitric oxide by lightning discharges is estimated to be 1.8 Γ— 10^35^ molecules, within rather large limits of uncertainty. Implications for the global budget of odd nitrogen species are cursorily examined. More data are needed to decide whether or not lightning‐

## An analysis is performed of the parameters of nearby lightning discharges. Vertical electric and two perpendicular horizontal magnetic field components were recorded in the frequency range from 300 Hz to 13 kHz. Observations were performed at Singapore on 26 February, 1991. Data were stored in
