โœฆ Synopsis

Recent research by the authors has confirmed the need for knowledge-based systems to assist construction estimators working within contractors' organizations to produce detailed cost estimates for construction projects. To enable such systems to be produced, it is essential to understand the estimator's decision-making processes. This paper describes the use of protocol analysis to review estimator's decision-making when undertaking the tasks within the estimating and tendering process. Particular reference is made to the task of performing the initial project study at the start of the tender period. Experimental results are described in detail and the implications in the development of knowledge-based systems for construction estimators discussed.
