Al~traet--This paper deals with the analysis of regenerative chatter vibration. The assumptions and results of conventional stability analysis are discussed. Thejnechanism of a self-excited vibration frequency development process and its influence on vibration amplitude is studied. As a result the mechanisms of chatter frequency stabilization and modulation of chatter amplitude are explained. Examples of self-excited vibration build-up simulations are shown.

In a flexible manufacturing system or a fully automated machining system, the computer control system of the machine tools must be able to recognize and control the cutting states, particularly the unwanted ones. Chatter.vibration being one of them, its onset needs to be detected. Although a lot of
