A process has been developed for the manufacture of para-tertlary-butylbenzolc a cid. It is based on blowing air through hot liquid para-tertiary-butyltohiene In the presence of catalytic amounts of cobalt. The product is recovered by cooling the reactor effiucnt to crystallize the tortfary-butylbenzoic acid. The crystals are separated by ccntrlfuging nnd washed with fresh feed and hot water. This process has been carried through the laboratory and pilot plant stages and commercial quantities arc now being offered. The paper describes various fcatures of the process and also offers some speculations as to the nature of the reactions occurring in the oxidation step.
