โฆ Synopsis
Although atomic absorption spectroscopy wit11 an air-acetylene flame is a most versatile technique, it is not normally suitable for the cletcrinination of elements wlrich form very staMc oside molcculcs in the flame, e.g. beryllium, aluminium, silicon, titanium, zirconium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum and tungsten. The stable oxide molecules can be dissociated by increasing tile temperature of tlic flame and by arranging to have a fuel-rich flame in which reducing conditions arc present. With this end in view, \YILI.IS ASI) Ahrosl~~ dcvelopcd 'Tantnkcm (500 fi.l).nt.). O.OGII g of 'Specpure' tantalum pentoxide was treated in the same way as for zirconium.
Molybdmwn (500 p.p.nr.). 0.0750 g of 'Specpure' molybdenum trioxide was dissolved in concentrated ammonia solution. The solution was evaporated to dryness, the residue dissolved in 0.5 M hydrofluoric acid, and the solution made up to roe ml with this acid.
