✦ Synopsis

ANAL\*TICA CHIMICA ACTA 557 THE DETERMINATION OF PHENOLS BY CHROMATOGRAPHY AND SPECTROPHOTOMETRY OF THEIR METHYL ETHERS IV. THE DETERMINATION OF PHENOLS IN CIGARETTE SMOKE 'l'he method of analysis previously described 1*2*3*4, has now been applied to the determination of phenols in tobacco smoke. Other studies dating from 1931 have indicated the presence of phenol~*O~', o-cresol', m-cresol', catecho16, guaiacolt*' and the classes of compounds grouped under the headings pheno1981*'1*111112113, polyphenol@, phenolic acids'*, and creosot#, in tobacco smoke, but in iriew of the varied means of obtaining the smoke (in some cases by techniques most unlike normal human smoking) the results are not clearly defined. The most reliable determination of phenols in tobacco smoke was made by RAYBURN, HABLAN AND HANMEI~, who used a machine to simulate human smoking.
