From a comparative strltly of the LJ.V. absorption spectra of a-nitroso-l)-naphthol and of &naphthol in ncntral ethanol and in the prcscncc of o.rN HC104 and O.IN IiOH rcspcctivcly, evidence in favour of the quinonc-oximc structure of a-nitroso-/3-naphthol has been prcscntcd. The spectrum of the copper chclatc of cr-nitroso-fi-naphthol indicates a planar configuration of the complex with consitlcrablc rcsonancc bctwcen the quinonoid and bcnzcnoid structures of the ligand.
