✦ Synopsis
We use surface Penning ionization spectroscopy (SPIES) to study the electronic properties of CO and NO adsorbed on Ni(l11). In this experiment an atomic beam contain& J 0 -roundstate and 2 'S He atoms collides with the adsorbate covered Ni(ll1) surface. This causes the transfer of ~20.6 eV energy into the electronic degees of freedom of the adsorbate molecules, forcing them to emit electrons. The SPIE spectrum Is obtained by analysing the energy of these electrons. The high surface sensitivity of this method allows us to measure the binding energy of the partly tilled 2x* orbitats of CO and NO.
