✦ Synopsis

Laboratory (DESY) sponsored a workshop on He II two-phase flow. This workshop was motivated by recent interest in the use of two-phase He II in large scale systems. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC -currently under construction at CERN) uses He II two-phase flow as a coolant for superconducting magnets. In the proposed TeV Superconducting Linear Accelerator (TESLA), superconducting RF cavities are cooled by saturated He II baths supplied by a He II two-phase flow. A requirement of both these projects is a reliable and predictable cryogenic system.

The workshop brought together thirty researchers from five different countries. A total of ten papers were presented, seven of which are printed here. Topics included: the LHC and TESLA two-phase flow systems, results of HE II two-phase flow studies in support of LHC, fundamental investigations of He II two-phase flow, experiences with large scale applications of He II, and operating experience with He I two-phase flow in accelerator magnets.

The presentations and discussions were very interesting and fruitful. The ongoing research should provide a good foundation for the application of He II two-phase flow to LHC, TESLA and other large-scale cryogenic systems.

The cooling system of the proposed TESLA 500 superconducting linac makes extensive use of He II two-phase flow. We report on measurements of the liquid level and temperature corresponding to different local heat loads at several sections of the He II two-phase flow channel in the TESLA (Tera-eV Energy Superconducting Linear Accelerator) Test Facility phase I (TTF1) during its operation. The measurements show
