This paper presents the characteristics of the steel structure design of a large capacity blast furnace shell at the rate of 4,000 m3 which was adopted by the Chinese steel metallurgy industry, and describes the application of BB502/BB503 type steel in its construction. This has two indicators of strength 8b = 490 n/mm, while 6s = 295 n/mm, blast power at 0°C is no less than 475. The thickness of the plate varied from 14 mm to 90 mm as used in blast furnace shell material. Altogether it illustrates satisfaction of the requirements for the construction design of the blast furnace shell in which the diversified measures for welding process include electroslag welding (KES & SES), automatic hidden electroarc welding, CO* gas protection welding and manual electroarc welding in the manufacture and construction of the shell.
